The journey from despair to hope is never easy, but for Luke, it was a path illuminated by unexpected friendships, unwavering support, and a newfound sense of faith. Growing up in an abusive household in rural Lockwood, Adam faced challenges many of us could never imagine. With little to no support from his family, he left home at the age of 17, seeking a better life in Billings.
Unfortunately, without a support system, Luke soon fell into the grip of substance abuse, which led to a life on the streets and homelessness. Despite the hardships, Luke, now 23, took a transformative turn in the spring of 2023, when he found his way toÂ
St. Vincent de Paul.
From the moment Luke walked through our doors, he was welcomed by our dedicated staff and volunteers, eager to lend a helping hand in any way he could. He started with simple tasks—collecting trash, cleaning the facility, and assisting in the kitchen. It was in the kitchen that Luke's potential truly began to shine.
A self-professed atheist, Luke daily engaged in spirited conversations with our Chef/Kitchen Coordinator, Stuart, a devout Christian. Despite their differing worldviews, Luke and Stuart formed a strong bond. He took Luke under his wing, mentoring him, teaching him, guiding him to the skills necessary to work in a commercial kitchen.
Through these relationships, Luke began to explore his own faith where he found Christ and peace in scripture, seeking a better way out of his situation. Over the following months, Luke thrived. The structure, daily routine, and meaningful work atÂ
St. Vincent de Paul reinforced the mentoring he received, allowing him to blossom.

With support and references from our staff, Luke secured a residence and a job as a line cook at a local restaurant marking a significant milestone in his journey. Even now, Luke maintains a strong connection with Stuart, frequently sending new recipe recommendations or chatting about scriptures.Â
Stuart reflects, "He's whip-smart, that kid. It was such a joy to witness his turnaround. It's nice to see someone take charge of their life and make the hard decision to change."
Luke's story is one of community, compassion, and resilience. At St. Vincent de Paul, we are proud to have been a part of his journey and remain committed to helping individuals like Luke find hope and build a brighter future.
